Richard Abella was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba in 1976. He has lived with his family in Gainesville, Florida since
2016. He is a graduate of the School of Audio-Visual Communications Media at the University for the Arts in Cuba. His undergraduate degree is also in Audio-Visual Communications Media with a specialization in cinema, radio, and television directing.
Over the last 25 years Mr. Abella has worked in film and television in Cuba, directing over 5 documentaries, 5 feature films for television, and one cartoon. He has given workshops on contemporary Cuban cinema and audio- visual language. A screen writer, actor, and producer, he has received recognition at events and festivals in Cuba and beyond.
In 2018 he directed the documentary “Hemingway: Between Key West and Cuba” (produced by Santa Fe College and Santa Fe College Foundation, Inc.) and, most recently, Zoological–a 45-episode fiction series.
